The Art of Law

Every endeavor
has its own art, whether it’s hitting
a baseball, writing
a symphony,
or handling a lawsuit. In the
legal arena there’s an art to envisioning solutions where others see problems. It has
to do with understanding how to resolve matters in a way that benefits each client. It has to do with the art of helping clients contain problems and expand opportunities.

We represent energy companies, both upstream and downstream, and individuals in both their on-going day-to-day litigation matters and in critical suits involving fiduciary duties, financings, buyout negotiations, mergers and domestic and foreign operations.

We also counsel with energy company boards of directors and executives in critical business litigation and corporate governance matters. Our senior attorneys also serve regularly as arbitrators in significant oil and gas disputes.

Recent experience:

  • Obtained unanimous jury verdict enforcing an area of mutual interest clause, leading to settlement valued in excess of $40 million.
  • Represented an exploration and production company against claims arising out of a COPAS audit and claims of negligent supervision in drilling a well.
  • Represented a client against claims for tortious interference arising out of actions to replace an operator of properties in West Texas.
  • Represented a client in a contract dispute regarding performance under a participation agreement covering two blocks in offshore West Africa.
  • Served as independent arbitrators in multiple disputes involving oil and gas companies.
  • Counseled an energy company board relating to a proposed merger and were witnesses in the Delaware Chancery Court trial in the company’s subsequent successful litigation.
  • Counseled the CEO and CFO of a public energy company and the CFO and General Counsel of another public energy company, each in separate internal investigations.
